How to Setup a Metamask Wallet

To purchase a Rooshocks NFT, you will need to have ETH in an Ethereum Wallet. This means you will need a Metamask or other wallet. Metamask is one of the most popular wallets in the crypto world, and the most popular when it comes to interacting with the Ethereum blockchain. A Metamask Wallet is normally accessed through a web browser extension on desktop or their mobile app. I wanted to outline why you would want a Metamask wallet (beyond just buying a Rooshocks NFT) and how to set one up.

Why would you want a Metamask Wallet?

There are multiple reasons why someone may want a Metamask Wallet. The majority of these reasons will centre around wanting to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. You can do things such as store cryptocurrencies, purchase NFTs, exchange two cryptos, or delve deep into the world of Defi. By having a Metamask Wallet, you will be able to transfer crypto to this wallet (or buy through the Metamask supported buy functions) and then complete a range of these other transactions.

How to Setup a Metamask Wallet?

Setting up a Metamask Wallet is quite easy but there are some important things you get right. You will first need to head over to the Metamask website. From there you can download the Metamask web browser extension. This will differ depending on which web browser you are using. Once you’ve downloaded the extension, you will be able to install this in your browser.

After installing the Metamask extension, you will be able to set up your Metamask Wallet. You will be given the option to either import an existing wallet with a secret recovery phrase, or create a new wallet. For this example, we will go through the process of creating a new wallet.

You will need to create a password when you first start the process of creating your Metamask Wallet. Make sure you keep this password secure as you will need it each time you log in to your wallet on that browser. Metmask will then give you a video you can watch that explains the security functions of a wallet in further details. The majority of this is focussed on your secret recovery phrase.

Secret Recovery Phrase

Your secret recovery phrase (also referred to as a seed phrase/master key), is the single most important security function of your crypto wallet. You will need to record this 12 word phrase and keep this secure. Metamask suggests either storing it in a password manager, a bank vault, a safe-deposit box or some other physical location. DO NOT STORE IT ON YOUR PHONE OR COMPUTER. I also recommend writing down at least two copies of this and if possible storing them in two different houses. You will require this phrase if you ever need to recover your wallet. If someone else finds your secret recovery phrase, they will be able to access your wallet and take any assets within it.

Metamask will generate your 12 word secret recovery phrase. You will then need to enter this in the correct order. This ensures that you have recorded this correctly. Once you have confirmed this, you will have successfully created your Metamask Wallet.

Basic Metamask Settings

Now you’ve successfully created your wallet, you can adjust some of the basic settings. In the top right corner, you can click on the circle and go to settings. I like to adjust the currency to AUD (Australian Dollars). You can also adjust the primary currency to Fiat if you prefer to view your holdings like that, and also rename the account. The default account anime will be Account 1. You can also store contacts in the ‘Contacts’ tab within settings.

Accessing your Wallet Address

Back on the main page of your Metamask Wallet, you can find 3 dots in the top right corner. If you click this, you will be able to click through to the Account details screen. This screen gives you a QR code, as well as your wallet address (of the circled function below on mobile). This is the address you will need to either send funds to your wallet, or provide to others to send funds to you. You can also view the wallet transactions on Etherscan or export your private key. You will also be able to copy the Metamask wallet address from the wallet main page by clicking on the wallet address below your account name.

Using Metamask

How you use Metamask will depend on what you are using it for. You can now buy crypto or send crypto to the wallet. Please make sure you import other tokens if you are planning on sending crypto to your wallet. By default Ethereum (ETH) will be in the assets list. If you are wanting to use other cryptocurrencies you will need to add them. You can also interact on other networks such as the Polygon network. This is slightly more advanced and is a topic for another day.

Once you have funds in your Metamask Wallet, you will be able to interact with apps on the Ethereum blockchain. You will also be able to mint NFTs such as the Rooshocks NFT project.

I hope that has been helpful in explaining the steps required to setup a Metamask Wallet. The main thing to remember is to keep your secret recovery phrase safe. If you don’t do this, all of your funds are at risk. If you have any questions or any questions about the Rooshocks NFT project, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
